Signs That Your Child Needs Glasses

Signs That Your Child Needs Glasses

Did you know that 80% of what children learn in school is demonstrated visually? If their vision is not in its optimum, then it can negatively affect their ability to learn and retain concepts in school. Since it’s back-to-school season, here are a few ways to know of your child may need glasses:

  • Squinting when trying to focus
  • Tilting the head, rubbing the eyes, or covering one eye when reading or watching television
  • Holding objects closer to the eyes
  • Turned eye (strabismus)
  • Tearing, itchy or burning eyes
  • Skipping words or sentences when reading or taking notes
  • Persistent reversal of words, letters or numbers
  • Poor performance in school or short attention span
  • Delayed learning of the alphabet
  • Trouble reading or poor comprehension

The best way to know if your child has vision or ocular health problems is to visit your Optometrist. It is recommended for infants to have their first eye exam starting at 6-9 months. Here in Alberta, eye exams for children are covered annually until they are 18 years old.
