Vision and Eye Assessment

Comprehensive Eye Exams
Comprehensive eye exams are an important part of preventative health care for everyone. A comprehensive eye exam involves more than determining your prescription for glasses or contact lenses; an eye exam is also used to assess the whole eye and visual system, and detect a wide variety of vision problems. For example, eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration can be detected during the course of your routine exam. Your eyes can also be an important indicator of your general health. Optometrists are often one of the first health care professionals to detect systemic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

In Alberta, comprehensive eye exams are covered by Alberta Health Care for children (0 to 18 years of age), and seniors (65 years of age or older).

Eye See Eye Learn

In Alberta, 25% of children enter grade 1 with an undiagnosed vision or eye health issue which can impede their ability to learn during their important first years of school. The Eye See Eye Learn (ESEL) program was created by the Alberta Association of Optometrists to help children reach their maximum learning potential. Through the Eye See Eye Learn program, Kindergarten students are encouraged to have their vision assessed by an optometrist, a service covered by Alberta Health Care. If a prescription is needed, the Eye See Eye Learn program provides a pair of prescription glasses at no charge. My Optometrist Calgary is pleased to participate in the Eye See Eye Learn program for our Kindergarten patients!

Frequently Asked Questions

A comprehensive adult eye exam (for those between 19 and 64 years of age) at My Optometrist Calgary includes:

  • A review of your past and present eye and general health issues, as well as your family history.
  • A discussion of your visual needs at work or school, home and for leisure.
  • Measurement of your current level of vision with and without your glasses or contact lenses, and determination of your prescription.
  • Assessment of your ability to move and use both eyes together.
  • Measurement of the pressure inside of your eyes.
  • A visual field assessment to measure your peripheral vision
  • Careful examination of the health of your eyes inside and outside. Drops to dilate your pupils may be recommended and administered.
  • A photograph of the back of your eyes.

We recommend that everyone should have a complete eye exam every year to check for any change in prescription and early signs of eye disease.

Eye exams for children are important to assess their visual development, and to confirm that they have the visual skills necessary for school performance and other activities. Children are unlikely to complain about vision problems, because they are often unaware of what normal vision should be. Because clear and comfortable vision is integral for proper learning and development, undetected vision problems can result in difficulty with schoolwork and extracurricular activities. For this reason, children ought to have their eyes examined by 6 months of age, and every year thereafter.
