Non-Contact Tonometer
Tonometry is a test that measures the pressure inside of your eye, or the intraocular pressure (IOP). Tonometry is often used to assess the risk for glaucoma, an eye disease characterized by damage to the optic nerve and often high IOP.

Tonometry measures the resistance of the cornea to pressure, and typically this test is done with a probe that gently flattens the cornea after the application of numbing eye drops. Non-contact tonometry uses a puff of air instead of a probe to flatten the cornea, allowing for faster measurement and eliminating the need for numbing eye drops. Consequently, non-contact tonometry is an excellent way to screen for high IOP, especially in children. At our clinics, we routinely employ one or both of these methods during the course of your comprehensive eye exam.
