5 reasons why regular eye exams are important

Even if you aren't experiencing any issues with your eyes or vision, it's important for you to regularly get your eyes examined for more than just your vision. Annual eye exams can spot other underlying health issues, or detect problems before they become more serious. With that in mind, here are five reasons why it's important to regularly get your eyes examined.

1. Many vision-threatening eye diseases have minimal or no symptoms

Eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy usually don't present with any symptoms until the disease has progressed to a later stage. By detecting these eye diseases early, there's a chance their progression can be slowed and vision may be saved. Regular or annual eye exams screen for all these conditions and can be a huge help in spotting their onset before the diseases progress to the point where your vision is compromised.

2. Other serious health problems can be detected by a regular eye exam

Routine eye exams have alerted many people to serious health problems they didn't even know they were experiencing, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and even cancer. While undergoing a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will be able to evaluate the blood vessels within your retina, which offer a good window into the health of your blood vessels within your entire body. Aside from cancer, all three of the aforementioned health conditions can be identified by changes to how the blood supply and vessels within your retinas look.

3. Regular eye exams will help your child do well in school

Because children don't know what proper vision is supposed to be, they can go on for years without ever having the vision correction they need to perform well in school. It's been long known that the majority of what a child needs to learn while growing up is dependent on having good vision, and a comprehensive annual eye exam can help ensure they have the necessary vision they need to excel in the classroom or on the playing field.

4. Nearsightedness is becoming a major issue among our youth

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is becoming more prevalent amongst children nowadays and more of them are developing the eye condition at a very young age. This is alarming for a few reasons, most notably the fact that myopia which progresses during childhood puts that child at a greater risk of developing vision-threatening conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. If detected early, myopia can be effectively managed and its progression slowed, lowering the risk of developing more serious eye problems down the road.

5. To protect your eyes and vision as you age

Perhaps this should have been the first reason, but it goes without saying that comprehensive regular eye exams can safeguard your eyes and vision from a whole host of problems or conditions, especially as you get older. After age 40, the risk of developing glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration increases. By having an annual eye exam, your optometrist can screen for these diseases— and if they're detected — put a plan in place to slow or stop their progression, allowing for a lifetime of visual acuity.
