3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Put Off Your Eye Exam This Year

August 23, 2020

Have you been contemplating putting off your annual eye exam this year? While it may seem like an appointment you can forego with little to no consequences, there are a few major reasons why you should reconsider that frame of thought.

An annual eye exam may not seem overly important if everything with your vision and eyes is going smoothly. You may think you can skip a year and everything will be just fine. While you might be right, there are a few key reasons why you shouldn't forego your annual eye exam this year. Let's take a closer look at them.

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Put Off Your Eye Exam This Year

When things are going well we tend to put things on the back burner or not worry about them as much as we maybe should. This is especially true for our eyes and vision. But delaying your annual comprehensive eye exam for even just one year can have serious consequences. Here are the top three reasons for why that is.

1. A lot of vision-threatening eye diseases don't initially have symptoms

This is perhaps the most important reason why you shouldn't put off your eye exam for this year. Many eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration start off with very minimal or no symptoms at all. Not until they progress to a later stage do most patients finally realize that something is wrong. Sometimes after too much damage has been done and the disease has progressed to a point where vision loss is imminent.

If you're able to detect the majority of these eye diseases early though through an annual eye exam, most of them can be successfully managed or their symptoms can be mitigated.

2. Annual eye exams can spot other health problems

Having your eyes examined annually is a great way to protect your overall health, not just your eye health. Because a lot of diseases or health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol affect the veins or blood supply in your eyes, annual eye exams are a great way to spot these health problems before they become more serious or progress to a more dangerous stage.

3. Outdated prescriptions can cause eye strain and headaches

If you've suddenly noticed you're suffering from more headaches than usual, that may be a sign that your current prescription is out of date and in need of updating. Even if your vision seems totally fine with your current glasses or contacts. By conducting an annual eye exam with one of our experienced optometrists at My Optometrist Calgary, you can rest assured your prescription will be up to date and you won't have to deal with any avoidable headaches or eye strain.
