May is Vision Health Month

Here at Health First Optometry, we are passionate about the vision and health of your eyes! Educating our patients is one of our top priorities and we enjoy doing it!

When you come in to see us for your annual eye exam, we will ask a series of questions to determine the health of your eyes, followed by a few tests to help your doctor assess your eye health.

Yes we know you hate that dreaded puff of air, but it’s for a good reason- promise!

There are several eye health problems we are able to test for, including: Glaucoma, Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Retinal detachments and much more.

You may not notice the symptoms involved, and many eye diseases can be heredity.

Dark shadows, flashes of light in your vision, Cloudiness or decreased peripherals

may be a sign that your eyes are trying to tell you something.

You’ve heard the saying “The eyes are the windows to your soul”. We believe they are also the windows to your health! Did you know that nearly one million Canadians are living with undiagnosed diabetes, and 1/5th of adults have high blood pressure?

Our Optometrists can spot early signs and help prevent diabetes related eye problems, as well as examine retinal blood vessels to identify risks of a stroke or heart attack.

The health of your eyes and vision can be preserved with simple steps.

Wearing sunglasses outside to block ultra violet sun rays can help to prevent cataracts developing in the future. If you work as a mechanic or welder, protective safety eyewear can help avoid harmful debris from damaging your eye as well. When you’re tired, take a break from staring at your computer screen for too long. Adjust the settings on your smartphone to filter out blue light. The number one thing you can do for your eyes: Get your yearly check-ups! This goes for your health in general, not just your eyes. After you see your family doctor for your yearly physical, remember to give your optometrist a call afterwards.
