Message to Patients:My continued enthusiasm and energy to care for patients of all ages, to discover and share interesting vision solutions nurture my passion for Optometry, and my enjoyment of caring for you and your families for many years to come.

Dr. Bernadette Osiowy, born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, first ventured out of the province to attend optometry school at the University of Waterloo. She graduated with her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1991. Soon after graduation, she went on to gain valuable experience practicing at several optometry locations in Ontario before settling in Calgary.

Dr. Osiowy was recognized for serving 25 years in Optometry in 2016, and still loves her profession. Whatever your vision needs may be, Dr. Osiowy is truly devoted to finding and providing the best solutions for you and your family. She enjoys seeing her returning families and sharing life’s rewards and challenges with them. She looks forward to providing many more years of vision and eye health care.

From 1992 through 2006, Dr. Osiowy began working with our group by travelling from Calgary to our satellite location in Three Hills. At the same time, she provided locum coverage within Calgary in several different practices. These early experiences helped her realize that she had the right fit and joined the team at Health Plus Optometry.

Thoroughly enjoying both the eye care and business interests of these offices, Dr. Osiowy became a partner with the group in 1995. Dr. Osiowy helped to open South Calgary Eyecare and to acquire Sunridge Vision Centre in 2007. In 2018 South Calgary Eyecare and Health Plus Optometry locations were merged into our new and expanded combined location, Health First Optometry, where Dr. Osiowy provides her patient care.

Dr. Osiowy has a special interest in Children’s Vision Development and Binocular Vision Therapy. She enjoys researching and providing specialty programs to help with management of myopia control, and to provide solutions to assist with vision demands from increasing digital time. She loves the interactions with infants and toddlers. She thoroughly enjoys treating and educating about the importance of early vision care intervention and sharing tips to ensure best vision development.

Dr. Osiowy keeps interested with many specialty eyecare treatments and services. This includes the intricacies and challenges of fitting specialty contact lenses for patients with keratoconus and other complex conditions. Researching and integrating advanced dry eye therapies with our team allows her to offer customized and successful solutions.

Dr. Osiowy particularly finds reward in guiding her patients through the diagnosis, referral and post care of more complex medical eye conditions. Her compassion and understanding the fears and concerns that her patients may go through helps them to understand the treatment and healing journey.

Each year through Canadian Vision Care (CVC), Dr. Osiowy has allotted her time and talent to both fundraising and participating in projects in Jamaica and Saint Martin. An eye care project in Malawi in 2015 involved working with Optometry students at the Mzuzu University Optometry school, as well as contributing to the construction of a community orphanage that has her keeping in touch with the Malawi project. In 2019, she enjoyed a project in Cambodia in which her family participated.

While balancing daily life of both business and her personal life, Dr. Osiowy enjoys raising her son. While supporting and participating in his interests including skiing, hockey, lacrosse, art, and piano, Dr. Osiowy rekindled her own love of music and started taking piano lessons herself. She has since accomplished Royal Conservatory Grade six and continues to enjoy playing in her spare time. She enjoys biking, skiing, hiking, yoga and working out at the gym.

Doctor Questions and Answers

I was in high school when I got my first pair of contact lenses. I was very intrigued by the whole process, so I investigated the career choices in eye care. Ultimately I steered the remainder of my high school courses so that I could focus on science and physics before applying to University. I never steered from my dream of becoming an Eye Doctor, and even had summer jobs in Optometry clinics to gain experience for my application.

What do you like to do for hobbies in your spare time?:

I enjoy playing piano, and have completed my grade six Royal Conservatory examination in June 2019. I continue to enjoy the challenge as I move on to my grade seven level.

I have joined the Highwood Cycling club in Okotoks, with plans to ride over 50km per week. I participated in the Multiple Sclerosis charity bike ride that covers 185km over two days round trip from Airdrie to Olds. This way I get the exercise and the upside of fundraising for a great charity.

I also mountain bike with our son, and still enjoy downhill skiing (although I am becoming outpaced on both skills by our 12 year old!)

I love fitness, going to the gym, and doing yoga.

I am an avid Sport Mom, supporting and volunteering for Hockey and Lacrosse!

Fortunately I have continued to thoroughly enjoy the combination of being an Optometrist, and the added bonus of running a business. My chosen career has evolved and been a great match for my interests.

I look forward to being involved in future advances in eyecare, participating in  implementing the newest technology and services, all the while enjoying the family feeling of caring for our business.

I certainly like some good oldies that have memories from watching as a child- Gone With the Wind, Wizard of Oz, and even Elvis movies, and have carried on the love of watching movies now with my son.

We enjoy Harry Potter movies together, and adventure and real life stories about other countries and interesting  personal feats and challenges.

Well I’d first have to admit that Chocolate and Ice Cream are favourites!!  But, I do love to cook, and enjoy learning about many different cooking styles. I’d say Italian is a favorite, with Spanish and Thai following close behind.

Healthy nutrition choices in daily meal planning is a big focus as well.

I have been blessed to travel to see family in Australia, and for Eye care projects to Africa & Cambodia. The opportunity to see lifestyles of the people in these countries, and the happiness and energy within those communities, even when it seems like they are living with less, gives one lots to reflect upon.

As for next adventures, my goal this year is to enjoy Alberta and BC with cycling, mountain biking, and hiking with my family. I plan to experience the adventures as if I was seeing it from a traveller’s view from another country. We have so much to enjoy right in our own backyard!

Hmmm, I feel like I keep experiencing things that are filling my bucket as I go!

That I love to keep busy, but balanced, in my pursuit of Health, Happiness and Shared Experiences with my work family, and my home family.

I have lots of energy to enjoy all these things, and plan to be practicing at Health First Optometry for many years to come.
