Meet Dr. Tannis Rode

Meet Dr. Tannis Rode

Dr. Tannis Rode is one of our lovely doctors at Three Hills Optometry. She completed a Biology degree at the University of Calgary, before entering the Doctor of Optometry program at the University of Waterloo. In addition to the comprehensive University of Waterloo Optometry Degree program, Dr. Rode gained valuable experience from an externship at an ophthalmology centre in Texas (Houston Eye Associates), where she received training on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of ocular diseases. She graduated with honours in 2014. Following graduation, Dr. Rode spent two years working in south-western Ontario, before returning to her home province of Alberta.

Here’s a few more interesting facts about her:

Why have you chosen Optometry as your passion/specialty?

I have experienced first-hand the positive impact optometry can make! I got my first glasses in grade 4, and have been wearing corrective lenses ever since. We rely on our vision every waking moment of our lives. I knew I wanted to select a career in healthcare and optometry was the perfect fit.

What do you like to do for hobbies in your spare time?

My husband and I enjoy hiking and travelling. I read a lot of non-fiction books. I am also part of a strategy board games league.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I consulted my husband, and he said “playing spikeball, winning board games, and neurotic cleaning 🙂 ”.

Do you consider yourself a cat or a dog person?

I like cats and bird-watching.

What is your favorite movie?

Lord of the Rings, Tangled, and the Marvel movies.

Your favorite dish to cook/eat?

Where is your favorite travel destination for vacation?

My favorite travel destination is anywhere with a National Park because I love hiking and beautiful scenery. Two of my favorites are Yosemite and Zion National Parks.

Where do you hope to go next?

Name one thing on your bucket list:

I wish to see a wild platypus.

What is something you want your patients to know about you that most don’t?

I’m good at removing metal from eyes. Many people don’t realize that optometrists are trained to deal with eye emergencies and infections, and we can usually schedule you in a lot quicker than a medical centre.
