The following list includes a few common conditions and age-related diseases we diagnose and manage:
- Cataracts: A clouding and thickening of the crystalline lens of the eye that interferes with how light is filtered causes clouding, dimming, and blurred vision. Cataracts are a major cause of treatable vision loss in older adults. Treating with proper vision correction as cataracts develop, and making referrals to the best surgeons when cataracts have advanced are part of our routine adult examinations.
- Glaucoma: A treatable condition that can cause blindness if undetected and untreated. Glaucoma cannot be reversed, but it can be controlled. Classic signs are increased eye pressure, damage to the optic nerve and vision loss.
- Diabetic Retinopathy: The longer someone lives with diabetes the more likely the person will develop diabetic retinopathy. This blinding disease destroys the tiny blood cells in the retina, which hinders the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the back of the eye. Over time, the result is impaired eyesight or blindness.
Diabetic Macular Edema: Many newly diagnosed cases of blindness are caused by diabetic macular edema. About 10 percent of diabetic patients are afflicted with this disorder caused by persistent high blood sugar. The elevated levels damage vessels in the retina and leads to fluid build up in the macula causing impaired vision.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults in Canada. The disease damages the macula, the part of the eye that focuses on fine detail. It doesn’t cause pain, but it destroys the cells in the macula, leading to gradual loss of central vision. Dry and Wet forms of AMD can be tested for and managed with numerous preventative and treatment options.
Dry Eye: Normal, healthy tear production is a must for proper eye function and clear vision. Dry eye disease results when you are don’t produce enough tears or not enough quality tears. Long term and advanced degrees of changes to tear production cause inflammation that can be managed with many home based and medical treatments.
Our Optometrists test for many of these serious eye conditions onsite using several state-of-the-art technologies including OCT for advanced testing of glaucoma and macular degeneration, Screening and Comprehensive automated visual field testing, Intraocular Pressure (IOP) testing, and Digital and Optos Retinal Photography.
