Save Your Vision Month: 5 Helpful Tips to Protect Your Eyesight


If you’ve never had a vision problem, you’ve probably never paid much thought to your eyes. This means that you may not be aware of the changes that occur as you age, some of which can dramatically affect your vision – even leading to blindness.

The good news? These preventive eye care tips can help protect your eyesight and stave off vision problems later on in life.


1. Eat a Healthy Diet


Eating healthy is a very important part of taking care of your body and your eyes. Some of the foods you should try and include in your daily meals include:

  • Green leafy vegetables: Foods such as spinach and kale provide you with nutrients such as lutein and zeaxanthin which have been shown to reduce risk for eye diseases.
  • Bright coloured vegetables: Eating carrots and sweet potatoes with your meals will help boost your eye health.
  • Fruits: Adding fruits such as oranges, mangos, and strawberries provides vitamin C and other antioxidants which can also help fight eye diseases.
  • Fish: Including salmon and other cold-water fish in your meals provide Omega 3s, which are good for tear production and can help relieve the symptoms of dry eyes.


2. Visit Your Optometrist For Regular Eye Check Ups


Getting regular eye exams is the only way to catch a number of eye problems, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma, ensuring that you receive timely treatment to prevent vision loss. If you do have a vision problem, you should see your eye doctor at least once a year to make sure your sight hasn’t changed.

For adults, some of the recommendations are as follows:

  • At 40 years old: A baseline eye exam.
  • From 40-55 years old: An eye exam every 2-3 years.
  • From 55-64 years old: An eye exam every 1-2 years.
  • 65 years and up: An eye exam once a year.

During this exam, your optometrist will ask about your family history, check your central vision, eye pressure, and pupils. They might also dilate your pupils using special eye drops to look in the back of your eye and check for any damage.



3. Stop Smoking


Smoking can wreak havoc on your general health, and it’s no different for your eyes. Any form of tobacco use will put you at a higher risk of developing cataracts and increases problems with dry eyes. It may also raise your risk of macular degeneration, an incurable eye disease that destroys your central vision.



3. Look For Warning Signs of Changes in Your Vision


If you notice any changes in your vision, however small, you should visit your optometrist immediately. Some signs to watch out for include double vision, blurry vision, and difficulty seeing in low light conditions. Other signs that warrant immediate attention include:

  • Frequent flashes of light
  • Red eyes
  • Floaters
  • Eye pain and swelling

Your optometrist has the knowledge and training to assess any changes in your vision and determine if any treatment is required. Early diagnosis and treatment of vision conditions will prevent vision loss and restore your quality of life.


5. Talk to Your Optometrist About Safety Glasses


If you work with tools, such as grinders and other power tools, or participate in active sports, then you should talk to your optometrist about wearing safety glasses. Most work and sports-related eye injuries that cause permanent vision loss can be prevented if you wear safety eyewear.
