A thorough examination of the retina should be a part of every comprehensive exam to make sure that your eyes are healthy on the inside as well as the outside. At My Optometrist Calgary, not only do we routinely evaluate your retinal health through the use of lenses and microscopes, but we also offer digital retinal imaging to capture a photograph of your retina.
Digital retinal imaging has proven to be useful for a number of reasons. Not only does this technology enable us to better educate our patients about their eye health, but comparison of these images year after year are important in the early
detection and monitoring of a variety of ocular conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Early detection of retinal disease is essential to minimizing or eliminating disease progression and potentially associated vision loss. Additionally, these photographs allow us to easily share our concerns with other health care professionals, and they act as an accurate permanent record of any changes in your eyes. For these reasons we recommend digital retinal imaging for all patients, but especially for those who have retinal diseases or a family history of eye disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, flashes of light or floaters in their vision, headaches, or those with a high spectacle prescription.
