Myopia is often diagnosed in childhood, typically between 8 and 12 years of age, and it can be an inherited condition, meaning that the likelihood of developing myopia increases if one or both parents are myopic. Additionally, rates of myopia are highest in East Asian and South Asian populations, with some studies reporting that up to 80-90% of Asian schoolchildren suffer from the condition. Treatment for myopia has traditionally involved eyeglasses or contact lenses to improve vision. However, recent studies have indicated that addressing both the central and peripheral vision may help to reduce the growth rate of the eye, thus slowing down the progression of myopia. This philosophy was incorporated into the design of the MyoVision spectacle lens by Zeiss. The MyoVision lens uses a technology called Peripheral Vision Management, which allows for clear central vision and simultaneous movement of the peripheral image in front of the retina. Initial research has shown that this technique reduced the rate of progression of myopia by an average of 30% in East and Southeast Asian children between the ages of 6 and 12, with a parental history of myopia.
MyoVision lenses are thin and light, and appear no different than regular spectacle lenses. Please consult with your My Optometrist Calgary doctor to see if MyoVision lenses are right for your child.
